Renewing a Thai driving licence means going back to a Department of Land Transport office with your current licence, your passport, a fresh medical certificate and the fee, sitting a short refresher session and the physical checks again, and walking out with a new card. Renewing your first, two-year temporary licence is the step that upgrades you to a five-year Private Driving Licence — after which it is a five-yearly errand rather than an ordeal.
The awkward part is timing, and it is awkward for an honest reason: the renewal windows everyone quotes online are not something we could verify. Renew before expiry and none of it matters.
- What renewal gets youFirst renewal upgrades a 2-year temporary licence to a 5-year Private Driving Licence
- Fee, currently reported as505 baht for a 5-year car licence, 255 baht for a 5-year motorcycle licence
- BringCurrent licence, passport with visa page and entry stamp, a medical certificate issued within the last 30 days
- Renewal windowsWidely quoted, not verifiable. Do not rely on a grace period
What you get back
The first renewal is the significant one. It converts your Temporary Private Car or Motorcycle Driving Licence, which ran for two years, into a Private Driving Licence valid for five years. Every renewal after that is another five years. How long a Thai driving licence is valid sets out the full structure.
Car and motorcycle licences are separate documents and renew separately. If you hold both, check both dates — it is entirely possible to renew one and leave the other to lapse without noticing, particularly if you obtained them at different visits.

When to renew
Before it expires. That sounds glib, but it is the only advice we can give with a straight face.
The renewal windows we will not state as rules
You will find the same set of thresholds repeated on every expatriate site: renew up to three months before expiry; renew up to a year after expiry without consequence; retake the written test if more than a year has lapsed; start the whole process again after three years. Those figures are consistent across several secondary sources — and we could not confirm a single one of them against the Department of Land Transport, whose own site was unreachable throughout our research. We are not going to publish them as rules, because a reader who plans around a grace period that turns out not to exist is a reader driving on an expired licence.
Ask your own office what the current window is. Then renew early anyway.
There is a practical reason to renew early beyond the legal one: an expired licence is its own offence in Thai law, reported at a fine of up to about 2,000 baht, and — far more importantly — it is not a valid licence for insurance purposes. The UK government's line is that driving or riding in Thailand without a valid licence "could invalidate your travel insurance and you'll be unable to claim if you have an accident or injury". A lapse you meant to deal with next month is exactly the kind of small administrative failure that becomes a catastrophic one after a crash.
What to bring
- Your current Thai driving licence
- Your passport, with the visa page and the latest entry stamp, plus signed photocopies
- A medical certificate issued within the last 30 days
- Photographs, if your office asks for them
- Cash for the fee
- Your Smart Queue appointment confirmation
Whether a residence certificate is also required at renewal is one of the things that varies by office. Some ask for one, some do not. It is the slowest document to obtain and it has the same 30-day life, so ask your office before you assume you can skip it — and if you are told you need one, start it early.
Book the slot first, then work backwards
Appointments go through the Smart Queue system at gecc.dlt.go.th. Fix the date, then time the medical certificate for the last few days before it, and the residence certificate — if you need one — to land inside 30 days of the appointment. The commonest way a well-organised renewal fails is a certificate that was inside the window for the original slot and outside it for the rescheduled one.
What you do at the office
Renewal is a lighter version of the original application rather than a repeat of it.
You will sit a refresher session on road safety and traffic law. It is shorter than the one for a first licence — how much shorter is another figure quoted confidently online and not confirmable, so we are not giving you a number of hours. Ask when you book.
You will sit the physical checks again: reaction time, colour perception, depth perception and a colour-blindness screen. These are the same checks as at first application and they are the part of renewal that people occasionally fail, usually on the reaction test by being too careful rather than too slow. The Thai driving licence test describes them.
You should not be sitting the written theory paper or the practical driving test on a normal in-time renewal. If your licence has been expired for a long time, that may change — see below.
The fee
Thai licence fees are built from an annual rate plus a small administrative charge, which produces 505 baht for a five-year car licence and 255 baht for a five-year motorcycle licence — roughly £12 and £6. Those figures are consistent across every source we checked and follow the published formula, but we were not able to open the Department of Land Transport's own fee page to confirm them, so treat them as currently reported and check the schedule posted at the counter. Bring cash.
A replacement for a lost or damaged licence is reported at up to 105 baht, on the same caveat.
If you have let it lapse
Reported practice is graduated: a short lapse is renewed normally, a longer one means retaking the written test, and a very long one means going through the whole process again. We could not confirm where any of those lines fall, and it would be irresponsible to guess, because the answer determines whether you need a morning or a fortnight.
The sensible move is to take the expired licence, your passport and a current medical certificate to the office and ask. Do not drive there. And in the meantime, if you hold a valid licence from home, remember that it plus an International Driving Permit may still be an option depending on your circumstances — which licence you can use in Thailand covers where that runs out.
If you are dealing with a first application rather than a renewal, start at how to get a Thai driving licence, step by step.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew a Thai driving licence?
Secondary sources consistently say three months. We could not confirm that against the Department of Land Transport. Ask your office, and do not leave it to the final week either way.
Do I have to retake the tests when I renew?
You sit a refresher session and the physical checks — reaction, colour and depth perception — again. On a normal in-time renewal you should not be sitting the written theory paper or the practical driving test.
Do I need a new medical certificate to renew?
Yes, and it must have been issued within the last 30 days. It is a twenty-minute errand at a clinic, so get it in the days immediately before your appointment rather than weeks ahead.
Do I need a residence certificate to renew?
It varies by office. Some require one, some do not. Ask before you plan around it, because it is the slowest document in the set to obtain.
What does renewal cost?
Currently reported as 505 baht for a five-year car licence and 255 baht for a five-year motorcycle licence, plus whatever the medical certificate costs you. We could not read the official schedule directly — check the one posted at the counter.
My licence expired while I was out of the country. What now?
Take it to the office with your passport and a current medical certificate and ask what is required. Reported practice depends on how long it has been expired, and none of the published thresholds could be verified. Do not drive on it in the meantime.
Can I renew at a different office from the one that issued it?
Department of Land Transport offices generally handle renewals for licence holders in their area, and expectations about the address you present vary. If you have moved province, ask the office you intend to use before you book a slot.
